3D: Leakage Reduction in Fluid Power Systems
ABSTRACT
Numerical models of a double lip reciprocating rod seal and a tandem seal have been constructed. Results for a typical application have been generated and compared with those of a single lip seal. For all three seals two major characteristics have been found to promote effective sealing: i. cavitation during the outstroke and ii. a larger film thickness during the instroke compared to that during the outstroke. The sealing effectiveness of the double lip seal was found to be somewhat less than that of the single lip seal, which was a result of high pressures generated in the interlip region. That effectiveness could be improved by alterations in the design of the secondary lip. The tandem seal arrangement has a higher sealing effectiveness than the double lip seal, which is only slightly less than the single lip seal.
