Research Coordinator/Laboratory Manager
The Center for Compact and Efficient Fluid Power University of Minnesota

The Center for Compact and Efficient Fluid Power (www.ccefp.org) is a National Science Foundation Engineering Research Center, funded with $15 million from NSF, $3 million in combined donations from participating companies and $3 million from participating Universities. The goal of the CCEFP is to develop novel fluid power components and systems that enable major energy savings in existing applications, fuel savings for transportation, and to create whole new industries of portable/untethered robotic devices. The Research Coordinator/Laboratory Manager will have responsibilities in coordinating research and managing the two fluid power laboratories of the Center in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Responsibilities lie in the following main areas: 1) ensuring that the laboratories operate in a safe, efficient and professional manner by means that include instituting and enforcing policy; 2) participating in research projects and assisting in the design, construction, and execution of experiments; 3) helping create a culture of professionalism; and 4) maintaining laboratory operating budget.

Candidates should have at a minimum a BS in Mechanical Engineering (MS desired) and at least 2 years of professional engineering experience. Hands on and theoretical experience in fluid power and control especially helpful.

Required qualifications
A doctoral degree in mechanical engineering or a closely related field with expertise in the areas of machine design and/or control systems. Excellent written and verbal communication skills including experience preparing technical documents and delivering presentations.

Preferred qualifications
Ability to advise graduate and undergraduate research assistants. Ability to simultaneously be involved with multiple research projects. Hands on experience in prototyping.

Duties/responsibilities
Conduct research that develops novel fluid power components and systems. Advise students in both formal and informal settings in all aspects of their research projects including: brainstorming, concept development, modeling, simulation, prototyping, experiment design, execution of experiments, analysis of experiments, and formal reporting of results in the form of papers, presentations, and dissertations. Act as the leader for research projects which includes running meetings, assigning tasks, holding researchers accountable for tasks, and being actively involved in the decisions of the projects. Assist researchers in a multitude of activities including: designing experimental setups, troubleshooting experimental setups, purchasing laboratory equipment, maintaining a clean and safe working environment, and interacting with venders to provide the equipment, tools, and supplies required for the laboratory. Interact with industry member companies on both a formal and informal basis including: regular written project updates, requesting assistance with specific research topics, coordinating donations of parts, providing tours of the facilities during visits, and interacting with project champions. The candidate will be expected to participate in the preparation and presentation of data at seminars and symposiums. The candidate will be expected to author, co-author and otherwise collaborate on reports and conference papers.

The core universities participating in the Center are the University of Minnesota (lead institution), the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Purdue University of West Lafayette, Indiana, and Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee. The University of Minnesota serves as the program's headquarters. Outreach universities and organizations are the Milwaukee School of Engineering, North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University, the National Fluid Power Association, Science Museum of Minnesota, and Project Lead the Way.

Tenure-Track Assistant Professor,

Appointment at the Associate Professor level may be considered for exceptionall well-qualified indivudals. An earned doctorate in mechanical engineering or closely related discipline is required. Applicants should have a strong interest in undergraduate and graduate teaching and in conducting sponsored research. The successful candidate will join the NSF-funded Engineering Research Center (ERC) for Compact and Efficient Fluid Power. The ERC will facilitate a radical transformation of fluid power, significantly reducing energy consumption and spawnig whole new industries. The ERC uses multidisciplinary teams and industrial collaboration to solve complex problems. Candidates with industrial experience are strongly encouraged to apply. Research areas of the ERC include mechanical design, controls, materials, manufacturing, fluid mechanics, I.C., engines and technologies for efficient energy storage, transmission and conversion. Application areas of ERC research include existing uses of fluid power such as manufacturing and heavy equipment and new uses such as hydraulic hybrid vehicles, un-tethered medical devices, wearable high-powered tools and mobile robots.

The Purdue University strategic plan calls for expanded participatoin in Discover, Learning, and Engagement. To achieve this goal the University is in the process of hiring over 300 new faculty members and is emphasizing interdisciplinary research, in part through establishment of the $100M Discovery Park (http:www.purdue.edu/dp).

The College of Engineering strategic plan calls for increasing the size of th engineering faculty from 289 members (as of 2001) to 395 (by 2009).   3. Distributed sensing, controls, acoustics and diagnostics for complex fluid power systems;
  4. Functional fluids, ER fluids, and/or tribological systems;
  5. Design and motion control of water hydraulic systems;
  6. Simulation of large-scale systems and human-machine systems;
  7. Modeling, design and control of wearable power assist devices and/or portable robots;
  8. Modeling, design and control of pneumatic systems;
  9. Modeling and control of micro fluid power systems;

Applicants should have a few years of inustry experience or demonstrated research funding from industry and government agencies. The ERC is affiliated with the Energy Center of Purdue's Discover Park. Candidates with multi-disciplinary research focus are particularly encouraged.
