Project / Leader: 3C - Dr. Steven Frankel (Purdue)

Title: CFD simulation of cavitating flows.

Project Goal: This project will create a new computer code to help us more accurately visualize cavitation

What is the Problem?: Cavitation is so powerful it can erode and damage metal surfaces just like erosion on a river bank. This damage, called “cavitation erosion,” changes the shape of the surface and causes machines to perform poorly. Then expensive replacement parts are needed to fix the problem.

How to solve the problem: Lots of modern machinery and equipment depend on smooth and efficient fluid flow to operate properly. However it is often very difficult to know if cavitation is occurring. This new computer code will enable us to design machinery without cavitation to ensure excellent, long lasting operation.
