Leader: 1D - Prof. Eric Loth (UIUC)

Title: Nano-Texturing for Improved Fluid Power Efficiency.

Project Goal:
This project will create extremely small bumps, dimples, and grooves one thousand times smaller than the width of a human hair to reduce friction and increase efficiency on solid surfaces in fluid power systems.

What is the problem?
Hydraulic systems waste a lot of energy pumping fluid across long distances in some applications.

How to solve the problem?
New coatings and materials that allow fluid to flow more easily could be used to make more efficient pumps and piping.
